Job Summary
Skilled work in the use of electric or gas welding equipment to fabricate, install, repair, or maintain metal assemblies. Lays out, cuts, and fits materials for welding using blueprints, diagrams, work orders, or oral instructions. Reports to the School Utility Lead Worker and/or Foreman who reviews completed work for compliance with directives. This entrance level class lies below that of Utility Lead Worker
Essential Functions
1. Cleans all foreign materials from workpiece using wire brush or hand-held grinder.
2. Clamps broken parts together in jig or vise and welds them using gas or arc welding process, according to type and thickness of metal.
3. Cuts defective part from assembly using band saw or cutting torch and re-welds new piece into place, as directed.
4. Straightens bent pieces, using hand torch, hydraulic press, straightening press, or jack and stanchion, as directed.
5. Over-lays many layers of metal onto worn surfaces to return materials to its original size and/or dimensions, as directed.
6. Examines weld for size of bead and penetration.
7. Repairs or fabricates expanded metal assemblies such as truck bodies, tool and equipment racks, beam supports, handrails, gates, vandal screens, burglar bars, fire escapes, security cages, goal posts, doors and related metal assemblies.
8. Performs other duties as assigned
Probation: Six (6) months
Qualifications
Open Requirements: Must have had at least two (2) years of welding experience.
Promotional Requirements: NA
Licensing: A valid structural welder's certificate issued by the City of Jacksonville with a minimum of three (3) years of experience. A valid Florida driver's license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of welding procedures, methods and equipment at the journeyman level in order to lay out, cut and fit materials for welding using blueprints, diagrams, work orders, or oral instructions
- Knowledge of shop mathematics
- Knowledge of tools such as drill press, shear, roller, metal cutting band saw, track operated torch, grinders, hydraulic pipe benders, etc.
- Knowledge of procedures, methods, equipment, materials and terminology of the welding trade
- Basic oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to layout and cut to fit all types of piping (black iron, galvanized, etc.)
- Ability to assist other crafts in the installation of said piping on cooling towers and boiler piping
- Ability to perform the various steps of the craft such as bending, cutting, brazing and grinding, and ability to weld in all positions (vertical, overhead, horizontal) using both oxyacetylene and electric arc welding equipment
- Ability to weld stainless steel and cast iron and other materials commonly used
- Ability to use wire feed welding machines
- Ability to perform routine maintenance on these machines and have knowledge of different wires and their usage
- Ability to make a material take-off list
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, plans and specifications
