The Traffic Engineer / Transportation Planner (Mid-Senior Level) will lead and support a variety of traffic engineering, planning, and applied technology projects. This role requires an experienced professional capable of managing tasks independently, mentoring junior staff, and serving as a key technical resource under the guidance of senior leadership. The ideal candidate brings robust analytical skills, a proven track record in transportation engineering or planning, and a strong capability in leveraging data and emerging technologies to solve complex transportation challenges. This position offers significant opportunity for professional growth, client interaction, and leadership within FDOT project delivery, traffic operations, systems planning, and innovative decision-support tools.

  • Manage and author traffic impact studies, corridor studies, and complex intersection analyses using industry-standard software (Synchro, SimTraffic, HCS, VISSIM).
  • Develop and review traffic signal warrant analyses, sight distance evaluations, and capacity/level-of-service (LOS) assessments.
  • Deliver comprehensive Traffic Engineering Studies and Traffic Operations reports tailored for FDOT and local agency clients.

Transportation Planning & Systems Analysis
  • Direct travel demand modeling efforts, overseeing model validation, data assembly, and complex scenario analyses.
  • Manage subarea studies, corridor planning, and specialized Systems Planning tasks, including Strategic Intermodal System (SIS) and freight analyses.
  • Draft and present high-level technical memoranda, planning reports, and presentations for agency stakeholders and public involvement processes.

Project Management & Deliverable Support
  • Ensure all technical reports, figures, tables, and presentations meet the highest professional and clarity standards.
  • Coordinate directly with Project Managers, clients, and agency representatives to meet strict deadlines and budget constraints.
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers and planners, providing technical QA/QC on their tasks and workflows.
  • Maintain meticulous project documentation consistent with firm QA/QC standards.

The Expertise You'll Bring:

Education and Experience
  • Experience: 5 to 8 years of progressive professional experience in traffic engineering and/or transportation planning.
  • Education: Bachelor of Science (BS) or Master of Science (MS) in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Transportation Planning, or a closely related field.
  • Licensure/Certification: Professional Engineer (PE) license in Florida or AICP certification is highly preferred (or ability to obtain via reciprocity within 6 months).
  • Software Proficiency: Advanced, independent proficiency with traffic analysis and modeling tools (e.g., Synchro, VISSIM, HCS) and familiarity with regional travel demand models.
  • Agency Experience: Proven track record working on FDOT, MPO, or Florida municipal transportation projects.

Professional Attributes
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to convey technical concepts clearly.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to manage tasks efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Collaborative team player who enjoys working across disciplines and seniority levels.
  • Intellectual curiosity and an eagerness to learn new tools, methods, and technologies.
