Job Summary
Performs skilled work in the operation of heavy construction equipment and manual labor tasks under general direction. Duties and Responsibilities
- Operate heavy construction equipment, including bulldozer, combination backhoe, and front-end loader.
- Occasionally operate smaller equipment as needed.
- Perform manual labor tasks in support of construction and maintenance activities.
- Conduct routine maintenance on assigned equipment.
- Work extended hours during and after hurricanes, disasters, or other emergencies.
- Provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers.
- Follow established safety procedures and promote a safe work environment.
- Demonstrate ethical behavior and sound judgment in all work activities.
- Apply intellectual curiosity and initiative to identify issues and seek solutions.
- Perform related duties as required.
Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience
- Experience in the operation and routine maintenance of equipment related to the primary assignment.
- A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
Licenses/Certifications
- Class "B" CDL required at the time of application.
- Water Distribution DEP Level 3 license required within one year of hire.
- White Belt Lean Six Sigma certification required within one year of hire
- Must pass a pulmonary function test and remain clean-shaven to use respirators and self-contained breathing apparatus safely.
Key Competencies
- Knowledge of the effective operation of medium and heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and accident prevention measures.
- Knowledge of hazards associated with heavy equipment and necessary safety precautions.
- Ability to understand and carry out general instructions related to construction and maintenance operations.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans (GIS and paper map reading will be tested during the interview process).
- Ability to operate a computer (hands-on computer skills testing will be conducted).
- Skill in the operation of heavy construction equipment (practical test will be administered).
- Good communication skills in English.
Physical Requirements
- Must be physically capable of using respirators and self-contained breathing apparatus.
- Ability to see, read, talk, hear, and handle or feel objects and controls.
- Significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, sitting, pushing, and pulling.
- Physical strength sufficient to perform strenuous labor under varying weather conditions.
- Ability to move up to 50 lbs. regularly.
